Hongyu Zhang

Hongyu Zhang is a lecturer in Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIST) in the Department of Earth, Geographic, and Climate Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He holds a doctoral degree in Geography from McGill University, a Master of Science in Geography from Western University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Geomatics with a minor in Computer Science, along with a Diploma of Excellence in GIS from the University of Waterloo. Before beginning his doctoral studies, Hongyu worked as an engineering support specialist at Geotab. His doctoral dissertation examines geoprivacy attitudes on Chinese social media and explores the factors influencing individuals’ location-disclosure behaviors in computer-mediated environments. These research projects align with his long-term goal of advancing responsible spatial data science to better understand the complex interactions between technology, environment, and society.
